Creating Templates for Specialized Letterhead

I'm trying to create a letterhead word document that other folks can use electronically. I've been able to create it using the header and footer but on the screen this letterhead looks very pale. We'd like to create it so that it looks like the printed one. The letterhead contains a "banner" across the top in order - there are no words or anything just a ribbon of color that takes up about 1" of the top of the page. On the bottom of the page, in the right hand corner, we have a graphic image. I created this letterhead using the header and footer as noted above and it works very well except for the color. I also created one without using the header/footer and it also looks great until it comes time to type a letter, for example, on it. As soon as you get near the bottom where the graphic is located, the document automatically creates a second page. This in itself is fine except that the graphic moves to the bottom of the second page and there is no top banner on the second page. I hope this description of my challenge makes sense and I hope there are folks who can provide me with an answer. Thank you.

For general information, see
http://home.zebra.net/~sbarnhill/Letterhead.htm. But note that the header
and footer of a Word document are always dimmed when you're working in the
document body. There is no way around that. You can see what the printed
output will look like by going to Print Preview.

Thank you Suzanne for your response. I'll check out the webpage you've provided. Please note that this letterhead that I am creating will not be printed by the users (or very seldom) so the image on the screen needs to look vibrant. With it being a heador / footer, it's doesn't have the effect we require yet the printed image is exactly what it should look like. I understand that the pale color fo the header/footer cannot be changed. What I'm hoping to find through this medium is another method of setting up this document so that it can be used electronically. Thanks.

There is no good way to do this. Word is designed for printed documents, not
electronic.

You can try making a template with the graphics in the page and anchored to
the top of the page (even though located at the bottom). This will give you
your first page and the graphics shouldn't shift so long as you are typing
after the anchor location. Your second and subsequent pages will be without
these, though, unless you either manually insert them (not a good idea) or
put them in a header/footer.

Generally experienced Word users have found the placement of letterhead info
(or spacers) in the header/footer to be the best method. Hope this helps.
