creating shortcuts for characters

Hi does anyone remember how to create a keyboard shortcut
for characters (e.g assigning "ctrl u" for the micro
symbol?
Help will be much appreicated.

for characters (e.g assigning "ctrl u" for the micro
symbol?

Not a keyboard shortcut exactly, but you can usually insert any
character into an application as follows:

For µ:

hold down the Alt key and type in 230 on the numeric keypad
on the right of the keyboard, (not on the keys above QWER...),

release the Alt key and voilà: a µ in your application.

You will need to find a list of ASCII character numbers to enable
you to use the full set of accented letters and characters.
 
Go into the help and support center under your start button and type in hotkeys or keyboard shortcuts and start reading. There are complete and detailed instructions there on how to map keys and what shortcuts exist. Good luck. {:>)
