Creating shortcut to see file?

I have had had on several recent occasions to use explorer to find a
file which is located many branches down & rather difficult to find.
Since it seemed likely that I might wish to get the same file again soon
I thought about creating a shortcut. This was easily done by right
clicking. When I clicked the shortcut it didn't take be to the files
location, but instead asked what program I wished to use to open the
file. I didn't wish to open the file just to see it. How can I do this?

Sounds like your link file association needs fixed.

Wesley has given you the correct answer.

A shortcut opens a file in the native program that created the file, unless
you purposely choose a file association for a different and compatible
program.
