Creating Partions When Re-Installing XP-Home

Should a separate partition be created for the OS when doing a
re-install or should the entire drive be used as the partion?

If a seperate one is better how do I determine how big to make it?

That's a personal call.

Some people partition it so they can reinstall their system partition as
needed - leaving their data partition intact without any additional effort.
I have yet to see any other argument that made sense for the multiple
partitions other than just pure organization - when the partitions all
reside on the same physical drive anyway.

I personally would not make a boot drive any smaller than 10GB - minimum -
if it was not going to be my applications (Program Files) directory as well.
If it was - I would make my at least 20GB, opting for 40GB. Not that any
larger would be a waste, just that 40GB would be my preference for a boot
/system directory.

However - I usually just make one large partition and have frequent backups
for my important data.
