creating datafile of student sign-in log

I need to record student sign-in times/dates in either an excel or
access database. I wish to have students key in their id number and
have the system automatically insert their first and last names. Then
if this is correct, (accept button?), write-out in excel or access the
entry along with the date/time stamp. Can someone give me an idea as
to how to accomplish this? Whether it would be better to use excel or
access? Need someone with more insight than I currently have.
