Creating an ASR Floppy Disk

S

Steve

How do you create an Automatic System Recovery Disk for
Windows XP to fit on a Floppy Disk for using with Windows
if there is a problem? I tried doing the Microsoft Backup
to do it, but it tries to backup like 300MBs, backing up
the System State, etc to the Hard Drive. I didn't want to
backup anything to the hard drive, I just wanted to
create the ASR on my floppy disk. Thanks for your help...

Hi

Have a look at the following article:

"Automated System Recovery"

Thanks, I've actually already seen that article and tried
it, and like I said in my original email, it doesn't just
create an ASR disk, it does a large backup on your hard
drive. Unless I'm doing something wrong, or unless you
have to do a backup on your hard drive as well as the ASR
Floppy Disk. There was a way in previous versions of
Windows to just create the Emergency Repair Disk, without
haveing to do large backups on your hard drive at the
same time. Do they work together and you need the backup
on your hard drive to work with the ASR Floppy Disk?
Thanks...

The ASR works the way you describe it. There is no Emergency Startup Disk
like the ones you could make with earlier versions of Windows. With XP the
CD itself is bootable and gives you access to the Recovery Console which is
a set of somewhat helpful tools. Go to Start button->Help and Support and do
a search for Recovery Console.

If you want to make a boot disk that might help you start XP in the event
that it won't boot you can try this suggestion
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q314079

If you don't have an XP CD you can use the 6 (yes count em') floppy bootdisk
set that corresponds to your version of XP. Download the makings from here
and have a box of floppies handy

Hi

The floppy disk is so that you can access the backup. Yes, the backup is
put onto the hard disk, different partition, CD etc. so that it can be
restored at a later date if needed. The floppy only contains the hard disk
configuration.

Crusty \(-: Old B@stard :-\)

You really think that all the recovery information is going to fit on one
1.4 meg floppy? Suggest you go to "help and support" and read up on ASR
backup!
