Creating a wifi and crossover cable network connection.

I currently have wi fi b installed in my laptop and desktop. Everything
works great. The only thing is file transfers are quite slow (obviously due
to 11Mps Xfer rate). Is it possible to set up an extra network connection for
the crossover cable as well as keeping my existing connection for wifi. So
then i can quickly switch between each one ( wifi for surfing any where in
house, and crossover cable for file transfers), as at the mo i have to go
through the network connection wizard everytime i want to switch, which is
time consuming and boring.

Andy,

Absolutely. It's easy under Windows XP, where you can tweak the Static Route
table from TCP/IP Properties.

After setting up the wired connection from both computers, you go to both
connection properties on both computers, and tweak the Interface metric (TCP/IP
Properties - Advanced - IP Settings tab) so the metric for the wireless is
higher than for the wired connection. Maybe set each wired metric to a 1, and
each wireless metric to a 2.

For non XP systems, you have to tweak the Static Route table, manually.

Hi, still having trouble. How do i configure the connections. As i said i
have the wi fi set up great, the desktop has the direct connection to the
net(broadband). The problem is i think that i have to disconnect the ethernet
broadband connection from my desktop to connect the xover cable. When i then
do the wizard i lose my previous wifi setup. Is there a complete idiots
guide for doing this??

Andy,

I guess I'm confused. What network interfaces do you have on each computer?

Provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name and version) with each ipconfig listing.

Chuck

Andy,

OK, I am starting to see.

Is your internet service NTL cable broadband? Are you connecting Homepc
directly thru Ethernet to the cable modem? And running ICS on Homepc?

You need to connect the cable modem to the router, and have both Homepc and
Andy_n_Clair connect to the router wirelessly. Get rid of ICS on Homepc. Once
that is done, then the RT8139 adapters on both computers will be free, and you
can permanently connect them by the crossover cable.

Here are a few websites with useful tutorials on how to setup the modem - router
- computer connections:
