Creating a New Multilevel List

I'm wanting to create a multilevel list because I hate the way they automatic
formatting refuses to use normal outline form. I've created a new multilevel
list several times, but it does not save from one time to the next. Is there
any way that I can create and define a list style that will stay there (and
perhaps even make it the default!)?

First, go there, read and assimilate!

and this might be useful as well:

Without that understanding and the methods described therein, you will never
fully master this feature.

Once you have done it properly, just click on the "save to template" option
when creating styles, if you are working on a document based on Normal.dot,
your changes will be saved there, and become available to all documents you
create thereafter.
