Creating a New File in Explorer

In Windows Explorer when you 'right click' you are given the option to
create a new folder or a shortcut. You can also select a variety of file
types to create, for example a Word Document or a Text Document.

Does anyone know how to add a new file type to this menu? I suspect it
requires some changes to the registry but I'm not sure where to start.
