Creating a network

I have 2 PC at home and on every PC I have a network
adapter:
1st: "SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter"
2nd: "Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC"

I have connected this two adapters with a standart
network cable, but I can't use the nework. I have an Icon
that shows me "A network cable is unplagged." on both PCs.
The cable is fine, I checked it between my modem and PC.

The windows wizard can not create a network while the
status of the cable is set to "... unplagged".

When I use the "ipconfig" command, I get the message:
"Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection Network:
Media State ...............: Media disconnected"

How can I use this small network between this 2 PCs?
What can I do?

Direct connection of 2 network adaptors to each other requires the use of a
"cross over" cable, not a standard cable.

By the way, for people reading these and wonder, a crossover cable ties the
transmit and receive ends to each other from one computer to another. They
are only 4 wires of the 8 that are actually used, 1 pair for transmit and 1
pair for receieve. Using a standard cable as stated below ties trasmit to
transmit, and receive to receive to each other - not good. Try to picture
two phone handsets facing each other, which way would you have to hold them
so they can both hear each other?
