creating a line that can be written above

I want to create a many lined .doc in 2002 Pro that will allow me to come back at a later time and enter text above the line. How is this done without the text character taking the place of the line space? I did it a long, long time ago, of course I can't remember how I did it
Any suggestions other than taking a memory class?

XP has nothing to do with this. This is entirely controlled by the
Application. If you are trying to do this with MS Word, go to the following
site, scroll the list on the left to Word, select one of the Word groups and
try your question there:
