Create own icons from pictures

Is it possible to make my own desktop icons? eg, a picture of my trash can
at home as the 'recycle bin' on the PC desktop

If this is possible how is it done?

What type of file does it have to be saved as and how do you activate it as
the 'recycle bin' icon?

I use a program called Icon Cool Editor, crappy name I know but does
the job. It can also capture any picture you like and allow you to
import and edit it then save it for use as an icon. You can't use any
old picture for an icon as is it must be converted to an icon file
windows can handle.

The extension for icons is .ico

There are millions of free icon galleries on the web - google for em

There are many applications can edit icon files out there also. You
can make your own from scratch in MS Paint but it is a lot easier to
use the right tool for the job.

To change the trash can icon, right click on empty area of desktop and
select "Properties" then click on "Desktop" tab

At bottom left click on "Customise Desktop".

In the middle select the desktop icon you want to change, ckick on
"Change icon" and follow prompts.
