Create mean (average) mathematical symbol

I'm trying to create the mean symbol to represent average (X with a ~ over it). Couldn't find it in Insert Symbol. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Use your equation tool (Insert > Object > Microsoft Equation 3 > Overbar template tool)

Maggie,
Find the Embellishments button on the Equation Editor toolbar. Look at the third option on the fourth row of choices. That should do the trick.

Sharon,
That gives a straight line above the X, but I need a tilda (~).

I've never heard the arithmetic mean described as using a tilde. Most users
ask for an overbar. There are two ways to create a character with a line
over it, both using an EQ field:

1. Use the EQ \o (overstrike) field to superimpose an overbar (character
0175) over your other character.

2. Use the EQ \x (box) field with the \to switch to put a top border on the
selected text.

The use of the EQ field and its switches is well documented in Word's Help
file.

Whichever method you use, you can save the result as an AutoText entry for
ease of future insertion.
