word 2002 . I select text which I would like to form into columns. instead
the whole document is formed into colums. this text happens to be in a table

You cannot have newspaper-style columns inside a table.

As you format a selection into column format, Word will put it in a
separate section (with the chosen format). In other words, depending
on where in a document you select text, you would get two or three
sections. For selected text in the middle of a table, you'll get a
similar result. Word will split the table (either once or twice), and
put each of the newly created tables in a separate section. So what
you are seeing is probably a mixture of column and table formatting.

So what
you are seeing is probably a mixture of column and table formatting.

Clarification: What you are seeing is probably a mixture of newspaper
column and table column formatting.
