I just got XP Home, but it was pre-installed by Best
Buy. How can I create a backup CD for the operating
system? Is it necessary? (What happens if I lost my hard
drive - how would I get my OS back?)
Thanks.

Store bought computers usually have a hidden partition
containing a method to recover or reinstall the operating
system. Information on how to use it should be covered
in the User's Guide or Manual that came with your new PC.

You PC should of come with either a Windows XP CD-ROM, a RestoreCD, or a
hidden partition with the RestoreCD's files on it. Microsoft has nothing to
do with how the PC makers do this. so it is best to contact Best Buy or the
maker of the PC for info.

In my experience.. If you goto the store that sold it to
you and ask them for the CD it they will give it to you.
Read the info on your computer (the ad) and see if it
says that it 'comes with microsoft windows XP'
or 'windows xp home edition included' if it says
anything that doesnt limit the sale (clearly state that
CD is not included) then most places will give the cd,
but only on a "if you ask, you can have it." basis.
