Create a new partition

I have a new pc with one partition in a big harddisk running Windows XP Pro.
Can someone tell me the steps to create a new partition from the OS
partition using the built-in ultility.

Thanks,

Ray

XP's DiskPart utility is capable of only partitioning a hard drive that is empty
or has "unallocated" free space.
For example, if you were to install a new second drive, DiskPart can be
used to partition and format it. DiskPart cannot segregate current files from
free space, therefore, only a sophisticated third-party partitioning program,
such as Partition Magic 8 , can be used with a drive that already has Windows XP
installed.

The only way you can create, delete, resize or merge existing partitions,
and not harm your existing Windows installation, is to purchase and use
a third-party partitioning program such as Partition Magic 8.

The alternative is to perform a "clean install" of Windows XP:

If this is a brand new computer without any info that you want and you have the full XP disk then you simply put the disk in boot the manchine choose to install XP and format the drive (wipe it clean) and follow the on screen prompts for creating as many partitions as you want. This can only be done after the HDD is formatted and contains no info what so ever and when first installing the OS. If after you have used the OS for a while and you decide you want to do this it will require that you save any data needed to a CD as all info will be lost because you will need to format the HDD and do a clean install. Not really that much of a problem. Remember this can only be done with a fresh install and all info or personal files, apps, and programs will be lost. Good luck.

Sorry, you can not do this. Using native Windows facilities,
there is no way to change the partition structure of a drive
non-destructively.

To do what you want, you have to either

1. discard everything on the drive, and start over with a format
and clean reinstallation, or

2. Use a third-party utility. Partition Magic is the best-known
product that can do this, but many people also speak well of
Boot-It Next Generation.

There is no built-in partitioning utility. You can create a new
partition from the Windows XP cd (usually done when installing or
reinstalling), but it is a destructive partitioning utility and will
erase all data. To resize or otherwise work with partitions while
keeping the existing data intact, you'll need a third-party program.
The one most often recommended (and very good it is, too) is Partition
Magic. I understand that BootItNG also has partitioning capabilities
and is highly recommended - I just haven't ever used anything except
PM.

The computer management utility that lets you manage your hard drives.

Unfortunately, if you HD only has one partition that takes up the
entire drive, then you can't use this utility. You have to go out and
buy a third party tool like Partition Magic.
