create a boot cd for installing XP

My MSDN one is bootable. Plus it's enhanced over standard retail
as it loads a mini booter to choose to boot home or pro.

Issit? I must try that... does it do RC and Repair options too?

Normally I prefer to diskette boot with CD support and run Setup
explicitly from there, so I can pass a response file as a parameter.
I don't remember the CD working when I tried to boot it to access RC

OK, it was bootable, but the PC did not find the boot sector when both
dvd drive were connected on the IDE bus. I removed one, and it's working
now. Ok
thanks for your help.

Since when?

Since 25 October, 2001, when WinXP was released to the public via
retail channels.

Check your jumper settings; M/S or both CS (when you reattach the
second). I've never tried this on a laptop but, sometimes the Install
gets lost if both devices on the secondary chain are optical and the
master device is not used. It still normally boots and then loses the
path during the install.
