create a boot cd for installing XP

fred

Hi all,

I have a XP Install CD with 6 disks for booting. My problem is that on
my laptop, I do not have any floppy drive, so I would like to create a
bootable CD install with my 6 disks & my CD. Or can I simply create a
bootable CD with nero and copy all files from orgininal XP CD ?

Thanks

Frédéric

What type of XP Install CD do you have ?, All commercially
created XP CDs are themselves bootable. Your Notebook's
boot sequence must have the hierarchy set to CD/DVD before
Hard Drive. Then you insert the disk & boot. A prompt string
"Press any key to boot from CD" will appear". Pressing Enter
or a spacebar tap will initiate the boot to CD and then you just
follow the on-screen instructions.

The Windows XP CD is already bootable.

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

NOTE: If you have an internal Zip Drive installed, physically disconnect the
EIDE and power cable to it before proceeding, otherwise your main
hard drive may not be assigned the customary C: drive letter.
After installing Windows XP, you may then reconnect it.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete all the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. ==> Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall.

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

9. If you happen to run into any installation difficulties, use the following resources:

Which OEM ? Does it have a Microsoft Hologram on it ?
If you insert the CD, does it Autoplay to the XP install menu?

OEM's have a lot of latitude on what and how they support
their customers. The prevailing approach is a recovery set
or partition on the hard drive, that's normally hidden. Maybe I
missed the key information in your original post that you have
a floppy setup disk set - was that provided by the OEM when
you purchased the PC or did you create it yourself.

Sometimes when I read postings, keywords and descriptions
aren't clear - so you infer something that maybe wasn't intended.

It's an OEM CD that I get with my laptop.

It is not bootable.

All true Windows XP CDs are bootable. Have you tried booting off it?

All *legitimate* WinXP installation CDs are bootable.

No need to create a bootable CD, as all legitimate WinXP CDs are
already bootable.

The issue is not so much the CD is itself is bootable; it is whether your
hardware supports booting the system from the CD.

Check your BIOS and change the startup devices (diskdrives) to CD 1st,
Floppy second and HDD 3rd. (remember to change back if and when you
successfully get XP to install - change back to Floppy 1st, HDD 2nd, and CD
3rd.)

All Microsoft Home editions are bootable.

MSDN isn't and and some big OEM CDs may not be, but I don't see Pro as
any different from Home in that regard.

My MSDN one is bootable. Plus it's enhanced over standard retail as it loads a mini booter to choose to boot home or pro.

The mini booter asks Pro or Home and then it's identical to retail from that point.
