CRC error

I'm having problems with a CRC error... here is the
situation.

Try to install a game or something, and it errors out
with a crc message, at a random % throught the installer.
I've ran check disk, nortan disk doctor and windoctor,
changed the IDE cable, replaced the CD drive.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thankyou

Greetings --

This error usually means that the disk is defective, but it can
also happen if the read/write heads of the drive that created the disk
aren't aligned the same as the drive that's trying to read the disk.

the game was baldurs gate 2, kinda oldish now, and the cd drive was brand new, installed an old kodak cd writer drive that works, and it wouldnt work.. today installed a new generic cd drive and it seems to work... any clue why? trying to understand computers more, but this is puzzling to me..
