crawling to a stop

my xp windows is slowing down so its taking longer to
fire up my programs e.g. word, email - what is really
noticeable is that the cursor sometimes is slowing down
and the mouse is finding it hard to move about the
screen...all in all, somethings going wrong.
any idea how I can speed things up..I am virus free at
the moment according to Norton and I have degramented the
disk with no improvement.

Hit Ctrl+Alt+Del/Processes tab/look under the CPU heading. What is
using the biggest percentage?

Things that might slow your system down:

-Do you shut your computer off regularly or has it been on for 6 months so
that lots of stuff is resident in memory?
-Is your hard drive nearly full- so your swap file is very small?
-have you defragged lately?
-Have you deleted temp files lately?
-Have you cleaned out cache files lately?
