Crashes, freezes and soo slow

Hi,
I run XP home edition and I get regular crashes and freezes during all sorts
of operations. Sometimes while playing games other times during shut down.
Also PC is really slow to load and operate and this is gradually getting
worse.
What can I do????
PC novice so please keep instruction simple- Sorry
Any help gratefully recieved
