Crashes during capture/file creation?

for the past couple of days, mm2 crashes on me about 80%
of the time during attempts to import video from my
camcorder. I'm trying to import about 5-10 minutes at a
time.... i either crash during the capture or crash
during the file save. the crash takes down all of mm2,
but leaves the .wmv files, in a quasi-corrupted state, in
the folder i've setup for my captures.

my rig is an AMD Athalon 2000+, 512 meg ram, about 3 gig
of swap, capturing to a 20 gig partition thats 70% free
and completely defragmented. C drive, which holds 1/3 of
the swap, is also defragmented. I've also tried shuting
down as many extraneous proccesses as possible
(messenger, av, etc).

any suggestions?

I should also note that i'm capturing via USB from a sony
trv65 (i think its 65?), and that the proccess crashes at
all of the bit rates that i've tried (640x480 @ 1,1.5,
and 2).
