crashed hard drive

Currently running W2000, but have an old hard drive from a W98 system
that crashed, can't get
OS to load. Basically, just want to get some files from the old HD. Can
I:
[1]Get an adapter that will allow to hook up the old HD to a usb port,
and just read the HD like
a flash drive and be able to transfer the desired files?

[2] Hook the crashed HD up inside the computer, and read it like an
extra drive(slave drive?)

Sorry if these questions are not clear, am not hardware literate, but
basically just want to
be able to copy some files from the crashed HD, thanks in advance for
any help/info
you may be able to render.

Best,
Frank

Depends a lot on what you mean by "crashed". If the drive doesn't spin up
then it is toast. If the operating system is damaged but the file system is
intact then yes, either of those options should work.

Dave,
I think the drive spins up, so will give the slave idea a try first.
Thanks for your
help on this issue. Best, Frank H.
