CRASH, Win2K, how to d/l an ERD

T

tom

I have an 'unreadable boot drive' BSOD.
Argh.
I don't have an Emergency Repair (recovery?) Disk
available, and the Repair process wants one.
2 Questions (please also send answers to
(e-mail address removed) )

1) Where can I download a generic ERD?

2) If I reinstall Windows 2000, and let it do the chkdsk
stuff, will it load the OS and leave my files intact?
Thanks!
Tom

1) Where can I download a generic ERD?
* There's no such thing. ERD's are machine specific.
2) If I reinstall Windows 2000, and let it do the chkdsk
stuff, will it load the OS and leave my files intact?
* No way to know with the information you provide.

Dave,
Assume I've tried everything, ie chkdsk /f, etc.
All I wanted to know is if there's a generic ERD
available for download (or is it machine specific), and
if Win2K Pro reinstall (w/o format) will leave my
original file structure intact.
I believe I did this on another machine w/ Win2K, doing
the install w/ available disk space, and could see my
directories elsewhere, but am not sure.
Barring that: would a WinXP upgrade attempt to find/fix
the corruption (either hard drive or MS Win2K file) and
if it did, again, leave my original directories intact.
Thanks,
Tom

Dave,
Didn't see your inlines (didn't know that's what it
meant, now I do, thanks). Just read your responses
past "if you post...."
So, no generic ERD. OK.
All I know is that I have Win2K on the machine. With
Win98 I could reload the OS 're-stabilize' the program
files, and the file structure would still be there. W/
Win2K, as it was built on NT, and is for corporate
environments, didn't know if a security feature was to
destroy all info on a re-install?
Any thougths?
Also, I have my username/password if that helps.
Thanks,
Tom

can I reinstall Win2K and keep the files? Is there a
security feature that will bar this?
Assuming it can find corrupt Win2K files and replace them
(and the HD is corrupted).
If there's more info needed, what do you want to know?
I'm not sure what else to tell you at this point.

You can't upgrade an operating system that doesn't start.

If you have the disk space, and your HD
isn't trashed by whatever happened to you,
you can TRY a new, parallel install of W2K
to a different directory than your original
install (important).

You can then take ownership of the data files
(if you were using NTFS) and copy them off.

Your apps will NOT work, but you should at least be
able to get the data.

An ERD disk is not a boot disk.

Did you ever get an answer to your question? I have the same problem--need a ERD.

Tom and Hollis,

And ERD is made as a backup from your files before anything is very wrong
Start
Accessories
System Tools
Backup
Emergency Repair Disk

There is only three small files to be placed on a Formatted floppy (format with NT machine)
If it's broke, this won't help

What exactly happens? Is your machine in an endless bootloop?
If so, boot into Safe Mode an do this
Start
Settings
Control Panel
System
Advanced [tab]
Startup and Recovery
uncheck "Automatically reboot"
then restart and copy the BSOD
post it here and someone will help you.

If that isn't it and it is boot related (without it being an infection)
do this
boot with a W98se boot disk and use this command
FDISK /MBR
after do this
SFC /SCANNOW
after that if it doesn't boot
do this (or use your 4 boot floppies for W2000)
Start your computer and enter the BIOS (tap the delete key as your computer starts)
go find the boot order and change form FLOPPY to CD-ROM first
restart and choose "Set up Windows 2000 now"
Insert CD or if you are using the CD to boot
Press enter
Press "F8" to agree with the EULA
Press"R" to repair (this important)
(if you used floppies, pull the last one out now)
Press Enter @ prompt
(takes a few minutes)
Prompt for language Press Enter
Enter CD Key number
(setup installs components)(takes several minutes)
Press Enter @ Finish Prompt to reboot

You have completed an inplace upgrade of W2000
You will need to redo you SP(whichever) (SP4 for me)
Redo all the Security patches and only the hotpatches you personally need
Restart
Some of your preferences and such will need to be redone
But basically you have a Clean install with all your data and apps. still in place

Thank you and Happy New Year,
don

don't forget to go into the BIOS and redo your first boot device
