Crash messed up my computer so I have a bunch of questions

Windows Media Player doesn't open at all: "An Internal Application Error has
occured" is the message I get.

Quicktime doesn't work either, it opens but as soon as I try to open a
windows media file it shows a white screen and crashes, but it still runs
quicktime movies.

AIM Triton stopped working as well, "ERROR: Enable to create Boxely service"
is the error I get.

I've tried unistalling and reinstalling all of these programs after running
chkdsk /f /r, but none of them work still. I also tried downloading an older
version of AIM, but it crashes when it attempts to start.
What is wrong with my computer and how do I fix it (besides buying a Mac?)

1) Any idea what caused the crash?

2) Please list which antivirus and antimalware measures you have on your
machine. Include brand names.

No, I have no idea what caused the crash, I was asleep when it happened. The
only programs running were AIM Triton, MacPC Bar, a few DesktopX widgets,
Stardock's Object Dock, Windows Blinds, and probably a screensaver.

I have Firefox as a web browser so very little can get through it. Anyway I
have Norton Antivirus, Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot Search and
Destory, and System Mechanic 5

What does the Event log show - why did it crash - anything in there ?
How about as each app crashes - what does it show then ?

Where is the Event log found? I already mentioned all the error messages
that I get, although I did find another problem.

iTunes can't find any shared music any more, but it doesn't crash.

AIM Triton says "Unable to create Boxely service" before anything loads.

AIM (5.9) asks me if I want to set AIM as the default messaging system, but
crashes then.

Media Player says an internal application error has occured before it loads

Quicktime doesn't say anything, it loads fine and will play a .mov or .qt,
but a mpg or wmv will just give me a white screen and a crash

Click Start, Run, and enter eventvwr.msc. If you think you'll be using it a
lot, make a shortcut on your desktop.

Thanks Doug, ok, there are two tcpic warnings right before the crash, a
W32Time warning, three browser warnings, then an error with MrsSmb. That
appears to be the last entry before I woke up in the morning and shut it down
manally. When I rebooted there was a bcm4sbxp warning and another tcpip
warning.

Also to add to the list of problems: when I click on search, the explorer
window shows up along with the little dog, but no dialogue from the dog.

Ahh! I took it to a computer repair place and they couldn't find what was
wrong with it. I need a new computer now. I'm going out an getting a
computer that is well known for NEVER crashing. Good Bye Microsoft.

Anytime someone has problems that 99.99% of users do NOT have, one must be
suspicious. I suspect you were not doing a good job with housekeeping on
that machine, hence the problems. There are always reasons, and in your
case, it's unlikely that it's the operating system.

Wallace,

When you checked the event log ...
Did you look at SYSTEM and APPLICATION logs ?
Did you click on " get more info" as I mentioned earlier to gets MS's definition of "what does the error mean ?"
'MrsSmb' and 'bcm4sbxp warning ' mean nothing to me - which logfile are they from ?
Going back to SYSTEM event log .... scroll back to ~ a day before crash - see any errors ?
Also - keep in mind that if you are having disk errors, those errors will probably not be written to the disk.
Before wiping your system and moving this disk to a new system, how about running format/scandisk, Norton tests before installing
new OS - may save you the hassle of new system "dying" too if reusing drive if it is a disk error.
