After upgrading a few machines to SP2 and attaching a USB
flash memory key the system blue screens and reboots. At
first I thought this was a localized issue but it occurs
on all systems upgraded (each a different hardware config)
and with 2 different makes of flash drives. We tested the
following hardware:

Defect Description:
Attaching a USB flash memory key to a system running
Microsoft Windows SP2 results in a system crash and a
reboot.

Machines:
IBM Thinkpad T42 Series (laptop)
Dell Inspiron 1150 Series (laptop)
Gatway e2100 Series (desktop)
Micron Milleniia (very old machine)

Drives:
IBM USB Key 64 meg
Lexar Jump Drives 128 and 256 meg models

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Upgrade any of the above listed machines to SP2
2. Attach any of the above listed flash memory keys into a
usb port of the machine.

My Question:
Has anybody else encoutered this or have a workaround
short of removing SP2 to resolve this issue?

I'm having the same problem. Does anyone have any suggestions? BTW, there
are no yellow exclamation marks in my device manager.

Are you using software for the USB memory (maybe for passwor
protection)? If so then you may need to get updated software from th
manufacturer of the USB memory.

I had a similar issue that was solved by updated software.

No, I don't have any additional driver software loaded for the USB ports or
flash drive. Any other suggestions? Is there some section/drivers of the OS
that I should try to reinstall?

Just discovered I am having the same problem with my Imation 256 Mb
flash drive. Instant I connect to the USB on any Winxp pro machine I
upgraded to SP2 crashes the computer. Imation tech support (in
Australia)have been fantastic, tell me they are reporting the issue
back to USA as there is a deluge of complaints. I was told to expect a
fix published and sent out ASAP.

I updated my XP machine to SP2 a few months ago. Have just bought a flash
drive and having great difficulty with it. I wonder if it would be the same
without SP2?

If it's a Windows problem I hope Microsoft can fix it ASAP.

I don't have any trouble with my flash drives in SP2.

Did anyone ever get a solution to this problem??

I have 2 PC's, desktop & laptop, but am only experiencing the problem on the
desktop. Anytime I connect my USB flash drive (PNY 128), the system will
automatically reboot, and if I do not unplug the flash drive, the PC will go
into a continual reboot cycle. This only started after installing SP2.

The same problem occurs when pluggin in a Fujifilm digital camera into the
desktop... neither issue occurs with the laptop.

Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks

I have XP PRO and SP2 and all work great for me. 3 diferent jump drives and
dig camera all work great.
