CPU Utilization 100%

My system was fine during the day and then in the evening it became
unresposnive. No error messages or symptons.

Checked task manager and found that Image name: WMPNETWK.EXE user: NETWORK
SERVICE was using all the cycles.

I ended the process and it just restarted itself and went back to 100%.

I have restared the system numerous times and have done a restore to an
older date and it just keeps happneing.

I can run fine is safe mode.

Any thoughts or ideas?

What is the malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is
clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

In safe mode I ran Adaware and deleted everything it found and then ran
Norton and it found nothing.

I'm a Norton user, Norton Ghost 9.0, Norton Internent Security 2006,
AntiVirus etc. Check out the processes in the "task manager" if you can when
CPU utiliization runs near 100%, I find its's usually a Norton process doing
it. I was using the AOL software, and often it's some AOL process. None of
these would show up as adware or spyware, so running adware, spyware does
nothing for you if it's Norton processes itself doing it.

If you really think the machine is clean (please refer to the procedures
at the link I already gave you), then do clean-boot troubleshooting to
determine what is running in regular mode and not Safe Mode that is
causing the problem.

You'd be better off in a Vista newsgroup.
 
Did you install WMP 11? Sounds like it.

Go into its Tools | Options | Library tab | Configure Sharing button,
uncheck "Share My Media". Exit the program.

Then go into right-click My Computer | Manage | Services tree node, look
for "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" in the list,
double-click it and change its Startup Type to Manual. Reboot.

Gone (I hope!).

Yes my son upgraded WMP last week not sure what version, but proabaly the
most recent.

I will try what you said when I get home tonight.

I checked and WMP was not set to sharing nor could I find anything for it in
my computer..

Any other thoughts?
