CPU usage goes to 100%

Using XP Professional with IE 6.0 installed.
Upon "starting" IE, CPU usage increases from 1-2% to 96-
100. I don't have this problem using Netscape 7.1

Can I uninstall IE 6.0 and install 6.0 SP1? Currently, I
cannot download (source file read errors) or access
windows Update.

Is there a way that I can download IE 6.0 SP1 as a file so
that I can install it on the problem machine?

Thank you for your help,

Ed

Oops!

Finger too quick. To go along with aforementioned
problem, once started, to shut down IE, the Task Manager
or powering off the system is the only way of closing IE.
