CPU Usage at 100%

Running Windows XP Home, IE6, cable modem internet access. A couple of days
ago I began to have this problem in which opening IE sends my CPU Usage up
to 100%, where it stays for a while. If I wait for it to settle back down,
and then try to open another web page, it goes back up and stays up for a
while. The page takes a long time to load, and never quite finishes.
Downloads are as quick as ever, an online speedcheck clocks me at T1 speed,
and I'm having no problem accessing my e-mail via OE. It's just viewing
html via IE. Once I close IE and do something else on the computer, it's
back to normal.

Any clues?

I had that happen before also. On my old computer it was happening and I
traced it back to the Real Player. Turns out that Real Player automatically
sends info about your computer and how often it is used to the company but
since I am on dial up and at the time I was not able to get online for
several days it kept on trying to send the info but could not because I was
not able to get online. The end result was that it kept on causing my
processor to run at 100% every 10 or 15 minutes.

In your case though I would suspect that you either have a virus or some
spyware on your computer that is causing this. A couple weeks ago my new
machine starting running at 100%. Even though I use dial up meaning that my
computer is off line more than it is online it did not take me very long to
discover that I had two variations of the sasser worm on my computer.

My anti virus software had missed it (the virus had only been out for a
couple of days) but I was able to figure it out by looking at my process
list and start up list. I noticed a couple of files that I did not
recognize so I did a google search on the file names and quickly learned
what they were and how to remove them.

My suggestion would be to update your anit virus software and do a virus
scan on your computer. If that comes up empty then try downloading SpyBot
or AdAware and have them check for any spyware.

I've got SpyBot & AdAware, as well as HijackThis. Ran 'em all this weekend.
I have Norton AV & Firewall. Ran Norton's Sasser fixtool, just to be sure.
Found nothing. There's really no extra junk in my system tray. I have
RealPlayer, but the StartCenter is turned off. I've cleared every cache
going. This is very aggravating. I've posted the problem in a few
different places, and all the advice I get is stuff I've already covered,
leaving me stumped & without a usable Internet connection. It seems
specific to the web. It spikes up when the browser's opened, and goes away
when I close it. Could it be some kind of port issue? I'm kind of fuzzy on
that.

It seems that it might be Norton's Firewall itself. When I disable it, the browser picks up to its usual speed. When I re-enable it, the CPU goes back up to 100% usage. Could that be it? Maybe an un- and re-install of the firewall will do it?

I am having the exact same problem. This si so
frustrating. Tried everything - updated definitions on
Norton AntiVirus and AdAware; ran both (slow as hell with
CPU spiking 100%). 187 objects quarantines. Okay - CPU
is running 2-4% for minutes until it spikes back up to
100%. 28-90 processes running via Task Manager and most
are iexplorer.exe or explorer.exe. Checked my start up
and msconfig; removed anything I knew shouldn't be there.
Still problematic. The only thing I can think of is that
I recently upgraded my IE to the most recent version cause
I thought I had a problem in my default user's profile as
anyone other than the Admin (me) couldn't use IE to surf.

If anyone can clue me in, I'd appreciate it. Short of
messing with my registry file or reinstalling - I can't
figure this out. - Chandra
