CPU usage and MPEG-2

Got a problem with Windows Media Player. (9-series)
Whenever I try to play a videfile encoded in MPEG-2 the
player does not quite cope. I get no audio, and the video
is played back very slowly. This happens both with .mpg
(.mpeg) and .m2v files (I know there is no audio in m2v,
but playback is still extremly slow and sluggish).
It also uses practicly all my cpu power. Even after I
have quited media player it is still there consuming all
my cpu power. Have to use the task manager to stop the
wmplayer process.

With other players like real, quicktime and powerDVD the
playback of mpeg-2 is fine without any problems...
