after i remove the P4 CPU with the Heatsink from the motherboard, the CPU
stuck with the Heatsink by the thermal past. Its very tight together. I
really don want to apply too much force to remove them since the processor
is fraquile. does anyone in this case before? how can seperate them safely?
pls help!

Twist it alittle left and right see if that breaks the bond, not sure
but i don't think it is thermal adhesive ?

If thermal *adhesive* was used then the heatsink and processor are now
one unit. If it is thermal paste then it probably dried out. For
either one, try using dental floss to saw through the adhesive or break
the dried paste. Be sure take precautionary anti-static procedures to
ground yourself to prevent ESD before touching and removing components
and during the dental floss sawing. You'll want to find the roughest
dental floss for the sawing, not the flat or waxed type. Use
mint-flavored round string floss.

Start at a corner and saw with the floss, and repeat from each corner
until the heatsink pops off. I'm not sure, however, what you can use to
clean off the remnant epoxy from the processor. Scraping it off with a
safety blade sounds a bit hazardous. For paste, GooGone or isopropyl
alcohol might work. You'll probably need someone else (also grounded)
to hold the processor while you saw away since you won't have room for a
long saw length of floss string within the case.

If possible, reinstall cpu and heatsink into the motherboard,
leave the case cover off of the system and run it doing something
stressfull to the CPU, like running Prime 95's Torture Test,
which will heat it up as much as possible. When it's hot,
quickly turn off system and remove heatsink while the interface
material is still warm, it will then be easier to remove.

After removing heatsink, all of that thermal material must be
removed and fresh thermal compound applied next time. Easiest
way to remove the compound is with a petroleum solvent.

sounds possible, i will give it a try. and yes its the damn thermal past
stuck with them.

I can't install back into the motherboard, remember u have to open the latch
on the mobo to let the cpu pins insert into the board? now the heatsink
stuck with the cpu and it block the latch to open. that's why i have to take
the heatsink apart from the cpu.

If i can install back into the motherboard then i wouldn't care if they are
stuck together.

Ditto.Had to do this a few times.I usually leave graphics demo going
to stress load the CPU but anything of that ilk will do :)

Heat the 'sink with a hair dryer, after removing fan.

pull the whole thing out since the pins are not completely lock, they just
securely attach. and when i pull the whole thing gently the latch is moving
up also
