CPU shortage. Don't know why!

Computer is taking ages to perform any tasks, many
programs stop responding. Task manager says CPU usage is
100% even when computer is idle.

Very frustrating, I would like to know what I can do to
make the machine work again.

Had same type of problem. BlasterWorm virus will cause
this type of problem. Update your virus protection with
latest downloads and inspect your system.
