My 2001 Dell computer with Windows XP has a virus that restarts my computer
about 12 seconds after I log into my screen name and everything is finished
loading. I have a friend with a virus protection program he was going to
install on my CPU a while ago, but with this new virus I don't think it's
possible to install a virus protection program in 12 seconds. I tried a lot
of different things to get around the virus like pausing all processes from
the task manager screen. Nothing worked. Would starting my CPU in safe mode
prohibit the virus from activating? If not, please give me some advice on
what to do. This virus is very aggrovating so please, if anyone knows how to
fix this or at least delay it so i can install a virus protection program,
please tell me what to do. I don't want to have to take it in for repairs.

Sounds like a variant of the Blaster Worm. Try the link above for
information. Basically, you need to get to Ctr-Alt-Del to bring up running
processes. Find an entry for Blaster, or any variant of it, and End
Process.

Good luck. Also try this old trick: Start>Run then type "shutdown a"
without the quotes. Update your machine and run a firewall, anti-virus
program and other security applications.

My daughter got a virus that inserted itself into the Prefetch folder of her
computer, which caused her computer to reboot constantly. The way to deal
with this is to boot into Safe Mode, find the Prefetch folder, and delete
everything there.
