cpu fan

A friend of mine has recently assembled a new system using an ASUS
M2N-SLI motherboard. He reports having a problem where the system runs
for a short time then gives an alarm about the fan running too slowly.
At this point in time he's just begun troubleshooting the situation.

One possibility is that the oem fan itself is defective. Looking at a
pdf copy of the manual I see where his electrical connection is 4-pin
which I presume includes the sensor control. I have a spare, new, AMD
fan which is a 3-pin connection. His manual states "this connector is
backwards compatible to the 3-pin CPU fan connector". I interpret that
to mean my spare should function running at a constant speed, am I
correct? If so we wish to add this to the testing process.

Any additional comments regarding this problem most welcome.

First check the temperatures. Some of the newer, quieter HS/Fan combos use
large, slow fans. If the temperature of the CPU is good, then you can go
into the bios and change the alarm's RPM value to something lower.
