CPU fan speed?

Athlon 2500 XP Barton with retail supplied fan on Asus A7N8X. Recently at
cold switch on the CPU fan starts off at high speed, over 4000RPM with a
whining noise. Settles at around 3500RPM after a few minutes with no noise.
CPU temp stable at 38C/100 and m/b temp at 13C/55F, PC not doing much.
Readings are using AsusProbe. What is the normal speed for the fan, is it
likely it's going faulty and should be replaced? Are the CPU and m/b temps
on the high side, I also have a side panel case fan and the PC is in a cool
room? What levels should I set the CPU fan speed, CPU temp and m/b
thresholds at to warn of any problems? What warning does AsusProbe give,
audible, visible or both?

m/b temp at 13C/55F
that's a little cold! Must be in a refrigerator!

set the cpu for 45-50C, mobo for 40C?
I have fans that run from 2500 thru 7000, so adjust accordingly!

Thanks for the reply. What worried me was the noise from CPU fan and the
fact that it wasn't always there, only the last few days. Still curious as
to what AsusProbe does when fan speed or temp falls below the set threshold?
Will it shut down the PC if it's unattended at the time?

No, all it does is display probe to the desktop with the monitor that
has the error detected, so if your not there when a prob occurs it's
useless.

On my A7N8X v2 non-dlx all it cares about is the CPU temp, even without
a fan plugged into the CPU header she still boots up and runs.

My 2500 stock fan never gets above 3200 RPM and if your cooler is fitted
correctly will work just fine.
If I connect the CPU fan to any other fan header my computer will not boot.
Read your motherboard manual and it will tell you what protection ASUS
boards have.

Yeah I was surprised it ran, CPU fan detection must be broke on my board
or in the bios (1004), well at least Asus C.O.P. works on my board! ;p

C.O.P works on mine too, but that`s why I want him to read the book.

I hear that, by the time I get a new mobo I've already read the manual
at least 3 times and basically know exactly what jumpers or anything
else that needs to be done, makes building them so much quicker. ;p

Hey Ed,

Saw your posts all over this board and was just wondering if you're the
same Ed who used to be on the SOYO board with the K7VTAPro Mobo a couple
years back?

Could be, I haven't been there in a long time, my K7VTAPro is still
working just fine.

Cheers,
Ed

I've been running an Athlon XP 1800+ for almost 2 years with an average
temp of 52C with no problems at all. Mine has a specified max
temperature of 90C. Your barton has a max temp f 85C.

To be safe, set the alarm on the probe at around 15 degrees above your
average temp.

which version of probe?
the way asus tweaked probe versions can make a huge difference in
readings
