i have recieved an email claiming that i have won money on the microsoft word
compitition. can you tell me if there is such a compitition.

Well you fell into a Microsoft Access (professional database) newsgroup.
It's easy to do. You need to use the drop down list where it says "Access"
and pick "Word" Access is first on the list and is the default value.

As for your question, I can tell you with 99.985% or better accuracy
that it was a scam looking for your credit card number or a check to claim
the prize or some such thing.

No. It's a fraud and a scam. They're trying to get your social
security number, bank account numbers, etc. so they can rob you.

Whenever you see a letter like this, if it sounds too good to be true,
it almost surely is. You can check them at

http://www.snopes.com

Search for the key words in the subject of the scam and you'll see
what's known about it.

Note that the "Access" in this newsgroup refers to the database
software Microsoft Access - this isn't really an appropriate place for
such general questions, but the webpage can be misleading - and I
wanted to get you an answer before you do something unwise!
