could not find place for swap file

Not quite sure if this is what you mean. The swap file in Windows is called
pagefile.sys . In order to find it, you're going to have to go to Tools then
Folder Options then you want the View tab. You need to click on "Show Hidden
Files and Folders" and make sure to UNCHECK the box for "Hide Protected
Operating System Files". You should also be able to see the pagefile.sys from
a recovery console if that is where you're looking from.

I'd also add: You shouldn't have to do anything to your swap file if you
just want to reinstall win xp. If you just want to do a repair install, I
think you might be going about it in the wrong way. The easiest would just be
to put the Install CD in and change your BIOS to boot from your CD drive
before the harddrive. There are other ways to do it if you don't want to have
to dig out the CD again, but they require a couple more steps.

I have tried to use the install CD...that's my problem. As soon as it goes
to install I keep getting the message "internal setup error" "could not find
a place for a swap file". But if there is another way, I would love to know
what it is.

Well, anyway you do this is going to require the install CD, but you can use
it from two different places. You can boot to windows, insert the CD, and
then choose to do an "upgrade" install. The "upgrade" is the only option to
choose, if that is not available, you'll either completely go over windows
and lose a lot of your data and documents, etc or you'll end up with a dual
boot which you really don't need. The other option is the booting from the
CD. If you're having problems, I'd suggest castlecops.com as the best place
to go for really good advice and help. They are very good. Here is a link
with more info on repair installs.

PS, if you manage to do a repair install, it may turn your firewall off.
Before you go online make sure to TURN ON the Win XP firewall. I've heard of
people picking up worms within minutes, especially on high risk networks.
(i.e. school networks)
