I have a small database that consists of two tables and associated form and
subform. The database is shared and modified by other uses on a small
internal network This has worked fine for a couple of years but recently a
problem has showed up. The first user of the programme (opening on a working
day) arrears to 'lock up' the database so that other users get this message
when they try to do anything, or exit their share of the database " Couldnt
save, currently locked my user (users) on Machine (users machine)"
Also i find i cannot use an append query on one of the tables (to archive
the table to a history table)
When i try to do anything to this table, i get a message to say like, Access
dateabase engine has stopped ..'another user is updating the same data that
you are trying to change" .........
But no other user is online at that time.
A help query suggest i should use the update method to resolve this ..but
looking at the help im not sure i know what to do here or why i am at this
point, considering that the datatbas was ok for so long
Any ideas anyone?
Im Access 97 on Wiidows XP and shared operating systems down to 98. My
options are set to "no locks"

There is an option in Access to open shared or exclusive. Might be worth
checking the "First Persons" setting to see if it is now "Exclusive"
