Corrupted recycle bin

J

Jack Gostl

I'm pretty sure I have a corrupted recycle bin. All attempts to "Empty" the
folder hang and eventually take the system with it. Various other problems,
but as I look at it, they all come back to file deletions. For now, I've
gone to the recycle properties and shut down the recycle bin, but I'm
looking for a more permanent solution.

At the command line, I've gone to "\recycler" and typed "attrib *", but
there don't seem to be any files there. But when I go to windows explorer,
and open the bin, I see whole bunches of files. When I try to delete files
one at a time, some delete nicely, others just hang everything.

I've googled around a bit for this problem, but I haven't come up with an
answer yet.

Running XP Pro SP2.

Any and all advice would be appreciated.

Thanks - Jack

Run Error Checking. Reboot. Try to empty the Recycle Bin again.

Error Checking (chkdsk.exe).
1. In My Computer or Windows Explorer, right-click the drive you want to
check, and then click Properties.
2. On the Tools tab, click Check Now.
3. Select both of these:

o Automatically fix file system errors
o Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors

You have to reboot for Error-checking to run.

For a look at the chkdisk log.

I know that the last time I had a problem with the RB (said it had files in
it, but none were there), I deleted the Recycle Bin, and it fixed it - that
may fix the problem.

Good luck

Tried it, interesting, some options I'd never seen before, but have the same
behaviour. An attempt to "Empty the recycle" bin really fouls up the system.
Pretty quickly even the icon freezes, then everything else stops responding,
and eventually I have to power the box off. Below is the output from the
event viewer.

Any other thoughts would be welcome.

Sorry, the message got away before I could pust it properly.

I was thinking of that, but how? The references I have found say do a "cd
\recycler" and then delete something. The problem is that there is nothing
in that directory. I did a "dir" and then an "attrib *". Nothing.

Do you mean Right clicking causes the freeze or while Windows is in the
process of deleting the files?

If it's Right clicking, look at these.

Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers

Right-click is extremely slow only when Network is enabled

No I missed the reference. I'll try these things on Monday. The machine is
in my office, and if I try things remotely, and they go wrong....

The simplest way to describe the problem is that when I right click on
recycle bin, and select Empty, a Dialog appears showing files being delete.
After a few seconds, sometimes, a message appears on the dialog saying 72
mintues remaining. After a few more minutes, the animation on the dialog
stops, and the system slowly goes down hill. Eventually I have to reboot.

Well, I'm about at wits end here. (Some would say that's only half a trip,
but I try.) I've tried all these ideas, including everything even vaguely
related from the URL you provided, and the whole system still hangs when I
try to empty the recycle bin.

Things like:

cd \
cd recycled

produce messages saying "system cannot find specifiec path".

I'm about ready to get out the big magnet, erase the disk and start over.
That will easily cost me a week of my life, setting this thing up again, but
its got to be better than what I have now.

*Last cry for help!!!*

Try: cd RECYCLER

If your drive is formatted NTFS you will Recycler folder.

Recycled is is used if the drive is formatted FAT32.

Just to close this loop.... I finally booted in safe mode and managed to
delete all the entries in my recycle bin.

Now, I'm not crazy about this. Its got a bad sound, but Spyware Doctor says
I'm clean, and the latest anti-virus scans come up empty, so I guess this
matter is closed.
