Need help!! I can't boot my win xp pro machine. Get
message: please reinstall <windows root> \system32\hal.dll
Any suggestions? I try my recovery disk and was not able
repair it. try bootcfg /rebuild and failed to because
corrupt file system. I try chkdsk /f, but I still can't
bootup. How can I copy system32\hal.dll files. I'm trying
not to reformat and reinstall xp- I'd rather not lose the
data.

Boot your machine with your WinXP CD, select Repair when
prompted, then select Recovery Console. You will now be
able to replace this file.

Alternatively, install the disk temporarily as a slave disk in
some other Win2000/XP PC, then replace the file. At the
same time you could back up your important data files.

You could also boot with a Bart WinXP boot CD. To make
one you need a WinXP Professional CD (but no licence
number!), a CD burner plus some tools from www.bootdisk.com.

After resolving this issue, think about your backup strategy.
All important files must be backed up to an independent medium
once every week. Next time you might lose the lot!
