hal.dll is corupt... after xp upgrade on new hard drive

I have a new partitioned hard drive, ihave the windos p
pro upgrade disk, whn installing it pompts for a windows
cd from a previous win version, i put in my win 95 cd,
after setup copies files and reboots, i get an error
message saying bad or corrupt hal.dll file, reinstall
hal.dll to system32 dir, i copy a hal.dll to the dir from
floppy but istill get the error.
can any one help ?
