corrupt pst file problem

B

Bob Griffith

I use Outlook 2002 with Internet Mail Only (IMO). My pst
file is 540,944 bytes. When I use Outlook now, it is
likely that my computer will crash with a blue screen.\

"cannot copy file bobg: cyclic redundancy error":
I tried to copy my pst file before I tried to fix or
change anything but at the very end of the copy I get an
error "cannot copy file bobg: cyclic redundancy error".

I have used Norton disk doctor and PC-Doctor to check the
hard disk (NTFS). PC-Doctor reports no errors, Norton
reports a couple of indexes that should be deleted.

I was surprised that seaching the MS KB and google for the
error message came up with nothing useful -- only some CD
burning related hardware problems.

My first concern is to make a backup copy before I try to
fix the pst file with the pst recovery tool. Any ideas on
how I could do this?

Bob,

Re-run Norton's and tell tell it to do a THOROUGH Check - it sounds
like your hard drive has developed a bad sector. These can only be
detected by having NDD try and read every bit of your disk for errors,
normal checks generally won't find them.

As you've found, you won't be able to backup your PST until you have
done this... and because part of the file will be lost during the
bad-sector marking, you WILL need to run SCANPST afterwards.

If NDD does find bad sectors you would be wise to invest in a new hard
drive now rather than wait until the problem gets worse.
