Corrupt My Pictures File?

G

After recently letting a friend download some photos from his USB key, I've
been having problems with my "My Pictures" file.

If I try to print directly from the "My Pictures" file, it is very slow (1
min+) connecting to the printer.

Easy Photo Print (software bundled with my Canon printer) hangs on opening
(as it's attempting to download photos from "My Pictures" file).

Photoshop is very slow (1 min+) opening the first file from "My Pictures"
(after the 1st file opens, it begins to behave normally).

Photoshop Elements hangs on File/Print command and never opens a dialog box.

I've already tried a system restore without success.

Since I'm having problems with 4 different pieces of software, and the
common denominator seems to be the "My Pictures" file, I suspect that either
the file has been corrupted or there is some kind of problem with the links
to that file.

Any suggestions as to what I can do to restore normal behavior? My software
used to play very nicely together.

'My Pictures' is a folder, not a file.
I suggest that you delete the folder, recreate it & restore the pictures
from your backups.

Well, yes, I tried that. Unfortunately it didn't make any difference.

Have you tried doing a system restore to a
time before this issue began?

Just out of curiosity, how many photos did your friend add to this
folder? Are they in subfolders, or are they all directly in
My Pictures?

Having thousands of photos in a single folder can make it very
slow to open, and will slow down all dialogs involving the folder.

Oh, there were lots. But the first thing I did was to copy them to a CD (in
case we had inadvertently deleted them from his keydrive) and then delete
them from my hard drive.

Yes, I did a restore to the previous day. I deleted all the downloaded
files. I uninstalled and reinstalled the printer and all its accompanying
software.

I haven't yet deleted the My Pictures file (haven't been able to back up my
photos first- too many for my one CD and I'm not sure that I have enough room
on my USB stick). I did try renaming it and creating a new My Pictures file,
but that didn't work.

I can't uninstall and reinstall any of my Adobe software yet as I am out of
town and don't have the installation CDs.

It just seems as if the problem lies in the ability of other programs to
retrieve photos from the My Pictures file. That's the point at which things
start to hang.

I wonder if the following steps would help:

1) Open a folder that contains .jpg files...

2) Right click a .jpg file and choose Properties...

3) Click the Photoshop Image tab...

4) Uncheck the "Generate Thumbnails" button...

5) Click OK...

John, when I right-click a .jpg file and choose Properties, the dialog box I
get doesn't have a Photoshop Image tab, only General and Summary tabs.

If I click on the Advanced button under Attributes, I get "Archive and
Index attributes" and "Compress or Encrypt attributes", nothing about
Photoshop.

If I click on the Summary tab, I get info about the image.

Ok...sorry, disregard the question. Maybe
your version of PhotoShop is different.
