Corrupt internet explorer

Some kind of adware/spyware appears to have corrupted my
internet explorer browser. I tried to remove internet
explorer using the "add/remove programs" in my PC's
control panel so that I could then reinstall a "fresh
copy" but I don't seem to be able to remove it. Even
though it no longer appears in the list of programs that
I can add/remove, I am unable to install the "fresh copy"
because every time I try to run the install/set up
program I am told that "there is a newer version of
explorer already on your system. Set up cannot continue".
I cannot understand why it won't let me overwrite the
corrupted program since the version I am trying to
install is v6.0 (ie the newest). Does anyone know anyway
of getting this corrupted version of internet explorer
off of my PC and how I can then install a clean version?
