when i try to install certain downloads (adobe reader for example), i get a
window that tells me the "file is corrupt". the downloads are coming from the
product web site (including windows update). my system is really clean, has
very up to date security! help!

thank you Engel for the suggestion - i updated this installer, but it did not
seem to help... someone has suggested that i run my recover disks and repair,
but i will have to make some first. i bought this pc from a local guy, used
and pretty clean. i did not even think about the disks at the time. i know i
can make floppys from miicrosoft download site, so...i guess this is the next
thing to try unless someone has a better idea! thanks for trying to help!

You can't replace a missing OS CD with anything you can download from
Microsoft's site. They do have a set of boot diskettes you can install--but
all they will do is get you to the point where the CD can take over, if your
machine is not able to boot from a CD--they don't contain XP itself--just
boot code.

I'd recommend that you post this issue in a more general XP-related
newsgroup--I don't think it is specifically Spyware related, and getting
more eyes on it may lead to a better solution.

The other useful advice might be to clean out both Temp folders and
Temporary Internet Files.

Use the Disk Cleanup app in Accessories, and the cleanup options in Internet
Explorer, Tools, Options to do these, or, perhaps, download a product like
CCleaner, for example.
