Recently done a fresh build - to save downloading IE6sp1 a friend burned me
a copy - its corrupt.
I went to add remove windows components and uninstalled IE/OE - re booted,
put xpsp1 disk in cd drive went back to windows comonents and added IE/OE -
instead of using the cd for IE5.5 windows put back the corrupt copy?
How do i get rid of it and get a clean copy in? i was hoping to go back to
IE 5.5 then use windwos update for the latest version.
Thanks.
Moon.

Windows XP comes with IE 6 NOT IE 5.5 (you cannot install IE 5.5 on
XP)
Try SFc /SCANNOW to fix system files including IE.

HOW TO Repair/Reinstall IE/OE in WinXP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378

CrystalBall© sez you need to check your system for hijackware:

Dealing with Hijackware

You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each and every
use, even "right out of the box". But even then, they can't catch
everything. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the Spyware forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/ for expert analysis, not here.**

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.
