Corrupt HAL.DLL

I've got Win98 on my C drive (1 partition) and tried to
install XP on D (1 of 3 partitions on that drive, D,E & F)

Multiboot works OK apart from XP which reports a corrupt
hal.dll

I've tried updating it straight off the CD hal.dl_ - no joy

PC is single processor QDI Advance 6T - nothing fancy at
all

Any ideas?
