Corrupt File

Grrrrrrrrr! My HP laptop is indicating the following: hpcmpmgr.exe -
Corrupt File. I'm not sure what this means. Just before the error appeared,
I had cleared my Temp. Internet Files and had started a Disk Cleanup which I
had to cancel before it concluded. Once this error appeared, I tried to
restart the disk cleanup tool but it just doesn't progress at all. The p.c.
won't defrag, telling me to run the chkdsk utility....huh? I'm not sure how
to go about doing that. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

My p..c. has an Intel Celeron processor 1.30GHz, 1.30GHz, 224MB of RAM.

I looked around for a means by which to repair the current version of
Windows (I had the ability to do that on an older desktop p.c. I had (I think
the OS was Windows 2000). Any ideas?
