what are the legalities of installing a single copy of
windows on two machines? i have a laptop and then also a
desktop. one has windows me and xp on it and the other
has windows 95 on it. is it legal to make a copy of xp on
the windows 95 machine and just run me on the other
machine so that the same version of xp wont be running on
two machines at once? i have another copy of xp coming my
way but until then is this alright?

it is illegal...besides only one can be updated.

Your EULA states each licensed copy of Windows (ANY version) can only be
installed on ONE PC. In additional, the activation process incorporated in
XP will only allow activation on one single PC so even if you do install in
on a second, you will not be allowed to activate it.

One OS copy for one machine period. The only product which is allowed to be
copied onto a desktop and laptop is the Office suite.

You would be in vialotion of the EULA you must agree to for setup to
continue and usually triggers a phone call activation.

Installation on two computers would require that you own two
licenses.

As it has *always* been with *all* Microsoft operating systems,
it's necessary (to be in compliance with both the EULA and copyright
laws, if not technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each
computer on which it is installed. The only way in which WinXP
licensing differs from that of earlier versions of Windows is that
Microsoft has finally added a copy protection and anti-theft
mechanism, Product Activation, to prevent (or at least make more
difficult) multiple installations using a single license.

No. The rule is quite clear. It's one copy (or one license) for
each computer.

There's nothing new here. This is exactly the same rule that's
been in effect on every version of Windows starting with Windows
3.1. The only thing new with XP is that there's now an
enforcement mechanism.
