Copying vinyl records using a Notebook

I want to copy vinyl records onto CD.
I have a notebook computer which has only a Mic in. It has no Line In.

What are my options?
Can I pug the turntable into the Mic In ?
Is there some other way to attach a sound card to a notebook ?

LPs or specifically the turntable is one piece of equit-
ment that must go thru a phono-in port.Direct to a comp-
uter will damage it,theres some type of voltage or amps
only a turntable has.Go thru a reciever,or amp,then use
the mic-in,dwnload the windows encoder for xp to record.
The mic-in should work, start in low settings.

You will need a preamp for phono cartridges in order to properly equalize
and boost the signal from the cartridge. You need to go into your sound
control panel mixer and turn off the 20db boost setting, if there is one. If
lowering your mike gain control quite a bit during recording still fails to
produce undistorted output, you may need to put some type of attenuator
between the preamp and the input. Finally, since the mike input is MONO, you
will need a special, stereo to MONO adapter, which has resistors in each
channel, to mix down your signal for the input. Using a plain, 2 down to 1
cable will cause severe distortion.

So if the mike input is MONO does that mean I will be recording my records
in MONO.
If so then this is not what I want as the records wont sound like they do on
vinyl.

Is there any way to hook an external sound card to a notebook computer
